Europe 2016 Sept 30th Day 33 Rome

Up early this morning as wanted to be at the Colosseum by 8am to grab our tickets and be under way before the crowds hit and it got hot. All good and it did not take long to enter. Wow what an amazing structure, and still standing after two thousand years, simply amazing. It was a good look around and admire, to think it seated 55,000 spectators and could hold as many as 70,000 and having been to many a modern stadium, there's not a lot of design  difference in 2,000 years.
After this we walked across to Palatine Hill and walked around this vast area or ruins, gardens and an odd museum. Interesting the Italian way. This could be such a magnificent site but is poorly kept, except for a couple of sites and with little signage and an equally dodgy map for directions. However every now and again a little gem that makes it magical. Forum was good but getting quite hot by this stage and almost two, so we pulled stumps and walked back to the Ritz, stopping on the way for a little pizza and beer. As should be done a little nap was called for and much appreciated by both I can tell you. There is definitely something to be said for the Mediterranean lifestyle and I now understand those frequent afternoon naps Peter Cretan.
A little shopping by some and then we went to the Museo dei Fiori Imperiali at the site of Mercati di Traiano (Trojans Market) next to Fori di Nerva (Forum of Augustus).  This was the best Italian museum we had been into with well laid out exhibits, excellent content well displayed and explained. There was a temporary exhibition; Made in Roma, which was about tiles, bricks, amphoras and glass work and the identification, markings of such, quite intriguing. Spent a couple of well spent hours here before heading back to the Ritz on dusk to enjoy some pre-dinner local cheese and meat nibbles with beer/ vino of course.
Tonight we headed out to a recommended little restaurant, not far from the Ritz ; Relazioni Culinarie. It was another all family affair and the food was great , Beef ( Beef Olives) for me and Monkfish for Jane. The young waitress was funny, daughter of the owners ( Italian father and Japanese mother ) who spoke with broad American accent which led me to think she had studied in the US; no just picked up through the American soaps and TV.
After this rather filling meal it was a gentle waddle back to finish the night with a little limoncello and grappa, before a bit of blogging and then the land of nod.
